Music productions - Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU PRODUCE?
I tend to work on Projects that excites me and get me enthusiastic. I don't like working on Songs that I hate or don't find interesting enough... If I'm bored I can't give my 100%. I like to commit to the Project, by achieving an Unique Sound that will make the Artist Distinctive and more interesting.
WHAT STYLE OF SONGS DO YOU PRODUCE?
Usually Rock and Alternative Rock are my preferences. Recently, though, I've been involved in Projects like Chinchwoo's and Hash's, which can't be really labeled as standard rock. If I can enter the Artist's Mind and get the Artist's complete trust every project becomes interesting, therefore I can "materialize" what the Artist was trying to achieve.
DO YOU CREATE A STYLE FOR EACH ARTIST?
Only if there is a sort of music chemistry between me and the Artist... that should be the aim. I don't like to hijack the Artist to a different direction. My goal is to understand what the project needs, considering the Artist's voice sound, the image, the stage presence.
DO YOU WORK ONLY ON LONG PROJECTS?
I believe that a real Artist must guarantee a longevity, therefore He/She must have a collection of songs to record. I also believe that, like the old days, a Distinctive Sound can be achieved if there is a connection between the Artist and the Producer. Those records made by a team of producers always sound like a Compilation of different bands...but if that's what the Artist wants, I will work as well on one song only. Sometimes this is the choice of the record label, when they don't know which way to go. It ultimately results in a project without a real identity...
HOW MUCH DO YOU CHARGE?
This depends on the lenght of the project and on the number of songs. It also depends if I have to help with the songwriting, or if the band already pre produced some material. Usually the more the songs, the less each costs... I prefer charging by song and not by the hour... this way there is less pressure and the Financer knows exactly how much is gonna end up paying. WHAT IF I WANT A REAL LIVE INSTRUMENT?
The facility includes a medium size live room, so any live instrument like drums or string quartetto can be recorded. I also have hours of recordings of instruments like multitrack drums, brass and strings that can be used if they fit with the project.
DO YOU PROVIDE FINAL MIXES?
That's up to the client. I can mix in my personal studio or in another studio or I just provide the rough mixes and the files to mix by somebody else in another studio.
WHAT ABOUT COPYRIGHTS?
I usually don't demand for copyrights if I don't write lyrics, create any original Riff or write any melodic instrumental part that makes the song more distinctive or recognizable. In the case I do, the price I charge does NOT include the copyrights percentage... Copyrights are not bought out! Usually it's better to discuss copyrights for each song according to the kind of job I did for it.
WHAT DOES THE CLIENT GET A THE END?
Usually the Client receives a Final Mix, a PA mix and an Instrumental Mix. If needed some alternate mixes such as Vocals 1db louder or 1db lower and so on can be done. Both 24bit premaster and 16 Audio CD are provided.
WHAT ABOUT THE BACKUP FILES?
Back up files are usually kept by the producer until the record company or Artist pays the Producer Fees.
WHAT IS THE PRODUCER FEE?
It must be clear that the price I charge initially is only for the time I spend on the project. When and if the Project is released by a record company the remaining Producer fee must be paid for the songs included in the album. In this way the artist can afford to produce his/her record before receiving an advance from the record label. If it wasn't like that, almost no unknown new Artist could afford a master quality production. The amount of the producer fees will be agreed for each project. Additionally the producer will get a percentage out of the sellings... but this is included in the record deal. It is a kind and lawful behaviour on the part of the Artist to put the Producer in contact with the Label at the moment of a possible future release.
